Osteoporosis is one of the most common problems in the world. Osteoporosis means porous bone that is weak bones. If you have weak bones, the chances of breaking bones increase—more in the hip, wrists, and spine.

Osteopenia is a condition in which the bones are weaker than the person in your age group. It is an early stage of osteoporosis. However, osteoporosis is a later stage of osteopenia in which bones are weaker, so much so that there is a risk of bone breaking with small energy injury.

  • Osteopenia is when the t score is between -1 to -2.5
  • Osteoporosis is when the t score is <-2.5

The risk factors for osteoporosis are:

  • post-menopausal -is one of the significant factors, as after menopause, chances of osteoporosis increase due to hormonal changes.
  • thin built or short stature have higher chances. Long stature, in comparison, gives no protection.
  • use of tobacco
  • deficiency of vitamins and calcium in the diet
  • less exposure to sunlight
  • diseases like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Celiac disease, Inflammatory bowel disease, Weight loss surgery, Breast cancer, Prostate cancer, Stroke, Diabetes, Hyperthyroidism, COPD, chronic kidney disease, Liver disease.

Bone density test (BMD TEST). Bone density test measures the strength of your bones. X-rays are done to measure calcium and other minerals in bones. They are called DEXA SCANS.

Anyone above 65 years of age BMD test. If less than 65 and post-menopause, the patient should have a BMD test if the risk of fractures is high.

Even if a person is living a healthy lifestyle, the chances of osteoporosis are always present. That’s why screening for osteoporosis is essential after 50 years of life and if the patient has risk factors.

The treatment technique involves:

  • Proper diet takes nutritious food
  • Lifestyle changes- quit smoking, reduce drinking, go for a healthy lifestyle, regular sunlight exposure
  • Regular Exercise- consult a physiotherapist or yoga instructor
  • Prevent fractures and prevent trauma and falls.
  • Medications.

The proper diet for preventing osteoporosis include:

  • Lots of Fruits and vegetables – like green leafy vegetables, broccoli, mushrooms, oranges, beans and peas, soybeans and their products, bananas.
  • Low-fat Milk and dairy products
  • Fortified Cereals and grains
  • Fish salmon, herring, cod liver oil
  • Almonds
  • Eggs

Get a proper meal chart in concern with a dietician and surgeon

One should avoid eating following food items:

  • Sodas
  • Packaged foods, refined and processed food
  • Excessive amounts of animal proteins
  • Lots of salt
  • Coffee reduces to 1-2 cups a day
  • Genetically modified foods instead use organic foods

The medications for osteoporosis or weak bone treatment include:

  • Bisphosphonates- decreases bone loss
  • Calcitonin
  • Es-tro-gen agonist/ antagonist
  • Parathyroid hormone (PTH) analog and parathyroid hormone related-protein (PTHrP) analog.
  • RANK ligand (RANKL) inhibitor

Kindly consult your doctor before starting any medications for osteoporosis or weak bones.

There is no complete cure for osteoporosis, but there are precautions to prevent, slow, or stop its progress. In some patients, bone density and osteoporosis improvement may be reversed to some grade. Take a proper diet, exercise regularly, follow a healthy lifestyle, follow your doctor's instructions, and take medications if required.
