Frozen Shoulder/Adhesive Capsulitis

Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a condition in which there is inflammation of the capsule of the shoulder joint. In simple terms, the amount of space in the shoulder joint decreases, resulting in

  • Difficult movement at the shoulder
  • Pain in the shoulder
  • Both pain and difficulty in movement increase with time and don’t allow the patient to perform daily activities.

There are a lot of reasons for Frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis, but a common one is

  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Injury to the shoulder with immobilisation for a long time
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Stroke
  • Idiopathic causes that are not known can occur on their own.

  • Pain in the shoulder joint, which increases with time
  • Decrease in the movement of the shoulder joint with time

Investigations include X-rays and an MRI. The surgeon typically uses clinical evidence to diagnose frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis.

Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is usually a self-limiting disease that heals independently.

The time the frozen shoulder takes to heal on its own, usually 18–24 months or even longer.
Till then

  • Pain killers
  • Physiotherapy
  • Injections inside shoulder joints

This treatment usually helps most patients. But the patient has to believe in the surgeon, which requires lots of patience.

Yes, but it takes 18–24 months or even longer.

In a few cases, if treatment for a long time doesn’t improve, we have to go for surgery.

Arthroscopic Capsular Release is the surgery for Frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis.

It involves

  • Rotator Interval Release
  • Posterior Capsular release
  • Capsular Release in other parts of the joint
  • Coracohumeral Ligament may also Be released.
  • Long Head of the biceps releases adhesions.
  • Subacromial bursa is also inspected, and Subacromial Decompression can be done together.

With the increase in patients with frozen shoulders or adhesive capsulitis, arthroscopic capsular release has become a routinely performed surgery worldwide. With the use of arthroscopy, it has increased recovery and quickens the time of healing.

Usually, it depends on the medical condition of the patient; if the patient is not suffering from any disease before surgery, the hospital stay is for 1-2 days.

You can take a shower within 3-5 days after arthroscopic capsular release. Usually, a waterproof dressing is applied to the wound, after which the patient can take a shower. But to take a bath or swim, patients will need 4-6 weeks. The patient has to keep the wound dry and avoid using hot water, as it increases swelling.

After arthroscopic capsular release, the patient will have to follow a regular physiotherapy routine for several weeks. Patients can start their activities after 3–4 weeks, like driving a car and doing their routine activities. The complete recovery of patients will usually take 3 months.

Usually, if the patient’s office work involves a desk job and no heavy work activities, he can join the office in 2-3 weeks. If it’s a field job that requires heavy work activities, it may take 1–2 months.

Usually, after arthroscopic capsular release, patients will require physiotherapy for 2–3 months, which can be done by the patient himself after a few weeks.

It depends on the recovery course of the patient after arthroscopic capsular release, but usually, patients can get back to sports in 3 months. We follow the international standards of proper rehabilitation and advise our patients to return to sports after 3 months of proper physical training. We believe we should follow the latest, best, and most thoroughly studied technique and provide results comparable to international standards.

After arthroscopic capsular release complications, the rate has decreased to a greater extent, but they can still occur. This includes infection, nerve injury, and residual stiffness of the shoulder.

It depends on the hospital category that the patients choose. At Simpainortho.com, we have tried to reduce the cost of surgery and hospital expenses and included complete after-surgery services, which are required by patients after surgery because we know treatment doesn’t end at the discharge of the patient. To ensure the quick recovery of patients at simpainortho.com, we believe that a patient requires expert care in the most comfortable environment for him until he is able to join routine activities. So, we have made different packages for different patients according to their needs, and that too at the most affordable prices.

Yes, most insurance plans have included arthroscopic capsular release.
