Fracture Treatment in Delhi

A bone fracture is a full or partial break in the continuity of bone tissue. There are several different ways that a bone can fracture. That are as follows:

  • A closed fracture is a break to the bone that does not have a wound/ cut present over the skin.
  • An open fracture is a break to the bone with a wound /cut present over the skin.

The symptoms of fracture includes:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Inability to move the affected area
  • Bend or deformity of the area
  • Damage to nerves and vessels around the fracture

The types of fracture repair include the following:

  • Plaster/ fiberglass casts, splints, braces, or compression bandages: It helps decrease contractions of the surrounding muscles and keep the injured area immobile.
  • Immobilization is what is required for a fracture to heal. Casts help broken bones (fractures) to remain in place where they are present naturally. Since we want bone to unite in a way present before fracture. No movement keeps fragments in their natural place and lets the bone heal in the normal place.
  • Open Reduction and Internal Fixation: This involves treatment of the fracture by doing surgery. Metal rods, screws or plates, and wires are often used to treat the bone and maintain the pieces of bone in the place where they were supposed to be for several days after surgery. The device used is usually placed inside the skin. In patients where casts cannot reduce or keep the pieces in their original position or close to normal position, in complex fractures with no wound/ cut over the skin, patients where long-term cast can’t be given, surgery is done.
  • Open Reduction and External Fixation: This is a surgery in which a fracture is fixed with the help of an external fixation device using a rod, rings, wires, nuts, and bolts, which are placed outside the skin on the fractured limb. The device supports the bone during its healing process by holding it correctly. It is often used for fractures with wounds, cut-over skin, or other complications, in fractures that cannot be treated by open reduction and internal fixation due to the risk of infection.

The points to remember before the treatment of fracture include:

  • Any break in bone or fracture has different treatments, and it also depends on the type of bone and which bone. This means there is a wide variety of treatments for fractures.
  • It involves major knowledge of orthopedics and trauma to treat the fracture.
  • Treatment ranges from simple to difficult options. Patients in consultation with a surgeon have to make a decision about which is best for them.
  • As treatment ranges from plaster application to surgery which can be major, patients should know all the options available to them and what will be best for them.
  • Make an informed decision after discussing all pros and cons of undergoing or not going for surgery and the risks after surgery.

It relies on the hospital that patients select and the kind of implant under consideration.
